Start with the crossing's DOT number or its location. Check the source dates on its page, and use the original records when you need to verify a detail.

Find a crossing

How do I find a particular crossing?

Use the search on the home map or browse the crossing directory. A DOT crossing ID has six digits followed by a letter. Confirm the road and location before treating a result as the crossing you need.

What if I do not know the DOT number?

Start with the road, town or state and check the map. A nearby crossing may have a similar road name. The crossing page and original FRA record help you confirm the location.

Read a crossing page

Do these records show conditions today?

They show reported information with source dates. Traffic counts, equipment details and incident records may cover different periods. A missing value is not zero, and a reported zero is not proof that no activity occurs. Open About the data for definitions and coverage.

Does a comparison tell me which crossing is safer?

No. The atlas helps you compare reported characteristics. It does not produce an engineering safety determination or replace a site assessment.

Use the explorer

How do filters and comparisons work?

Sign in to open the member tools. Choose filters that fit your question, then check the selection and source dates before comparing crossings. Change one filter at a time if a result is unexpectedly empty.

Can I download the whole dataset?

No. The atlas does not provide full datasets, national files or per-crossing data dumps. Use the permitted selected reports and comparisons offered in the interface. Original-source links remain available.

Manage your member account

How do I sign in?

Use the sign-in page with Google or your email address and password, and complete email verification. Use the account recovery options there if you cannot sign in. Member tools require an authenticated account.

Where are my saved reviews?

Saved reviews belong to a separate workspace for this browser. Signing in does not automatically move them to another device. Keep the recovery codes from workspace access. Clearing browser storage may remove access until you recover the workspace.

How do I ask for account deletion?

Use the privacy request path. Tell us whether your request covers the account, saved work or both. Do not include passwords or recovery codes.

Understand usage limits

Why am I seeing a usage-limit message?

The atlas limits requests, distinct crossings and exports to keep the service available and prevent bulk collection. Visitor and member allowances differ. Follow the message or retry time shown; daily crossing allowances reset at midnight UTC. Some network limits may be shared by people on the same connection.

What if my access was restricted?

Do not create another account or switch network addresses to bypass the restriction. Contact Tan Solutions with the page and message so the restriction can be reviewed. Repeated confirmed abuse can lead to a permanent restriction.

Cite the data

What should I include in a citation?

Include the DOT crossing ID, the original agency or publication, its reported date or period, the atlas page URL and the date you accessed it. Keep the source notes included in any selected report. A link to the atlas does not replace a citation to the original record.

How do I interpret unfamiliar fields?

Read the methods and source notes for units, dates, definitions and missing values. Follow the source link on the crossing page to compare the original record.

Share and embed

Can I embed a crossing or automate requests?

You can share a link to a public crossing page. Use an embed or oEmbed interface only when the atlas publishes it with instructions. This release does not document a public embed endpoint here. Do not iframe member tools, call unpublished endpoints or automate collection. A sharing link does not grant bulk access.

Report a data error

How do I report an incorrect record?

Contact Tan Solutions with the crossing ID, the atlas page, the field in question and a source supporting the correction. We can investigate the atlas display; corrections to the federal inventory must also reach the responsible reporting agency.

Use the FRA crossing inventory page to find the responsible railroad or state contact, or use FRA inventory assistance. Include the DOT crossing ID and the evidence for the change. An atlas correction does not itself change FRA's record.
