About the data

This independent atlas from Tan Solutions covers U.S. crossings reported open and at track level. It does not assess safety or confirm current conditions.

Original sources

  • Federal crossing inventory ↗

Retrieved . Traffic counts keep their reported year.

  • Federal incident reports ↗

Retrieved . History covers 2016 through July 2026. 2026 covers incidents through 31 July 2026, a partial year.

  • Project documents ↗

Reviewed . Each reference links to its source page. Announced funding does not confirm completed work.

  • Railroad ownership notes

Crossing pages keep the railroad name as filed. For well-documented mergers only, they add the current owner, for example Kansas City Southern, Soo Line and Dakota, Minnesota & Eastern, now part of CPKC under Surface Transportation Board Finance Docket No. 36500 (2023).

Surrounding places

Land cover and population describe the area around a crossing, not its users. Coverage and dates appear with each study. Interactive studies require an account.

Reading the records

Missing values are not zero. A crossing with no matched incidents may still have earlier or unreported incidents. Records without usable coordinates remain in the state directory.

Daily train totals combine daytime, nighttime and switching movements only when all three counts are valid. They are not live arrival times.
